About Polymer Penstocks

Polymer Penstocks is focused on the design and manufacture of HDPE penstocks as a modern alternative to traditional stainless steel solutions. We apply sound engineering principles and proven polymer fabrication methods to deliver durable, low-maintenance flow control equipment for water and wastewater infrastructure.

Our penstocks are engineered to provide corrosion-free performance and long service life in aggressive operating environments, reducing maintenance requirements and whole-of-life costs for asset owners.

Polymer Penstocks holds Australian provisional patents relating to polymer-based penstock design and manufacturing methods, supporting the development of robust, repeatable HDPE gate modules. These patents support the development of robust, repeatable polymer-based flow control assets, with a focus on structural performance, manufacturability and long-term reliability.

PPE’s HDPE penstock modules are currently in pilot prototype stage, with components manufactured and final assembly underway. Installer partners are invited to engage during first deployments

Von Mises equivalent stresses under sustained hydraulic loading are limited to conservative long-term HDPE creep design limits to ensure dimensional stability over the design life.

HDPE vs Stainless Steel — By the Numbers

Indicative comparison of HDPE and Stainless Steel penstocks, highlighting differences in weight, durability, lead time, cost, and embodied carbon. Values will vary with project requirements.

Up to 50% Lower Cost

HDPE: Lower raw material cost and efficient polymer fabrication can significantly reduce overall penstock cost. SS: Higher material cost and intensive fabrication and finishing increase total installed cost.

Up to 66% lighter

HDPE: Significantly lighter than stainless steel reducing handling, transport, and installation effort. SS: High density results in heavier assemblies, often requiring lifting equipment and longer install times.

Up to 5× Service Life

HDPE: Inherently corrosion-free and unaffected by water, wastewater, chlorides or most chemicals. SS: Susceptible to corrosion, pitting and crevice attack in aggressive or saline environments.

Days not months lead time

HDPE: Shorter lead times enabled by readily available material and simplified manufacturing processes. SS: Longer lead times driven by material availability, fabrication complexity and surface treatments.

0% Waste

HDPE: Lower Embodied Carbon. Predominantly recycled polymer welding and all-HDPE construction deliver a lower carbon footprint. Fully recyclable at end of life. SS: High embodied carbon from primary metal production and energy-intensive fabrication.

High-Performance HDPE Penstocks for Reliable Flow Control

Polymer Penstocks delivers end-to-end solutions, from concept and engineering to manufacture and supply. Our HDPE designs offer a corrosion-free alternative to stainless steel and aluminium, reducing maintenance and extending asset life.

Each penstock is custom-engineered for its specific duty—size, operating head, actuation, and mounting configuration—using CNC-machined components and precision-welded assemblies for consistent quality and performance.

We partner with asset owners, engineers, and contractors to provide fit-for-purpose flow control solutions that meet project specifications while minimising whole-of-life costs.

Why use HDPE instead of stainless steel or aluminium?

HDPE offers excellent resistance to corrosion, chemicals, and biological attack, making it well suited to water and wastewater environments. Unlike metal penstocks, HDPE does not rust or pit, reducing maintenance requirements and extending service life in aggressive conditions.

Yes. HDPE is widely used in water and wastewater infrastructure due to its chemical resistance, durability, and proven long-term performance in submerged and corrosive environments.

Structural performance is assessed using finite element analysis (FEA), with von Mises equivalent stresses evaluated under sustained hydraulic loading. Design stresses are limited to conservative long-term creep thresholds appropriate for submerged and sun-exposed HDPE components, rather than short-term material strength. This approach ensures predictable deformation, long-term dimensional stability, and reliable sealing performance over the intended service life.

Yes. HDPE penstocks can be designed and manufactured to suit project-specific opening sizes, operating heads, and mounting arrangements, including non-standard and retrofit applications.

HDPE penstocks are manufactured using a combination of CNC-machined HDPE components and welded polymer assemblies. This approach allows for accurate geometry, consistent quality, and robust structural performance.

HDPE penstocks are engineered for their specific duty, taking into account operating head, load conditions, and support requirements. When properly designed, HDPE provides adequate strength and flexibility for penstock applications.

HDPE penstocks can be configured for manual operation or fitted with electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuators, depending on project requirements.

HDPE penstocks are designed in accordance with relevant engineering principles and project specifications. Compliance with specific standards can be addressed during the design phase.

HDPE is known for its long-term durability in water and wastewater environments. Service life depends on application conditions, but HDPE penstocks are typically selected to support long design lives with minimal maintenance.

Penstocks are designed and manufactured in Australia, with materials and processes selected to suit local project requirements.
